ACHIEVEBLUE Culture Assessment and Transformation

Client Testimonial from Nick Cunliffe, Vice President Distribution GTA
ROGERS

Committed to bringing his organization back to the success for which it was known, Nick began the ACHIEVEBLUE culture transformation by defining the organization’s core values, determining the Ideal culture to drive those values and then assessing the Current operating culture. With that data as the vehicle to be shared, Nick set about to establish better communication and trust, first within the leadership team, and then throughout the entire organization.

The Culture Imperative

Here’s the crux of it. A robust organizational culture provides the environment for strategic execution with focus, speed and agility. Culture sets the tone for the personal accountability, team effectiveness and stakeholder engagement necessary for high performance.

Culture affects every aspect of the organization and, most importantly, has a substantial impact on an organizations performance, its ability to engage employees, and most important the belief employees have in the “Values” of the organizations.

Improving culture is a strategy, and one that underpins all other strategies.  Like any strategy that is worth prioritizing, it starts with measuring your “Current” culture against the “Ideal” – the “Ideal” as defined by the leaders and the “Current” as defined by the employees.  Their time will be spent in well defined activities which will show measureable results.

We believe that our tools allow the measurement of what up to now has been considered unmeasureable. With the data our tools measure, people in organisations can engage and discuss the undiscussable. The undiscussable is most often the source of much conflict and wasted effort.

While there are many factors affecting performance, our experience shows that performance levels most often depend on whether the strategic plans are being used effectively within the various company units and the overall organization. The degree to which an organization is successful in implementing strategy is, more often than not, a reflection of its culture:

  • An organization’s culture is defined as “the attitudes and behaviours” that are expected in order to fit in and be successful.
  • If there is a gap between the organization’s value statements and its actual attitudes and behaviours, then we have what is called a “cultural disconnect.” This has a profound and proven negative impact on desired outcomes such as employee engagement, innovation, team effectiveness and achievement orientation. Measuring the gap, therefore, between its Ideal vision and its Current operating culture becomes an essential component of any organization's Balanced Scorecard.
  • An organization’s leadership is the primary driver of its culture; “Inspiring leaders create inspired cultures; inspired cultures create inspired results.” The impact of leaders and leadership teams on the day-to-day actions, attitudes and behaviours is reflected in the degree of organizational innovation, collaboration, achievement, employee engagement and retention.
  • ACHIEVEBLUE believes when attention is paid to the synergies amongst Leadership Impact, Constructive Culture and Employee Engagement, a roadmap to a high performing organization will be revealed so it can be achieved. As baseball great Yogi Berra once said, “If you don’t know where you are going, how will you know when you get there?”

ACHIEVEBLUE’s research and our work with award winning organizations has enabled us to learn the following:

  • The more Constructive the culture in any organization, the greater they are in achieving their goals.
  • Leadership has the greatest impact on culture – the more Constructive the leadership, the more Constructive the culture.
  • Constructive cultures embrace calculated risk, unleashing greater innovation, creativity, collaboration, productivity and trust.
  • Highly Constructive cultures transcend typical organizations to a level that can only be described as “inspiring”.
  • Inspiring cultures exhibit the ability to sustain long term success, being both adaptive and transformational.
  • One of the common characteristics of inspiring leaders is their consistent acknowledgement of the contribution that their employees make to the organization’s success.
  • That the more Constructive the culture the more trust and belief in the organizations values.
